The Policlinico San Matteo is a Scientific Institute of Hospitalization and Care since 1982. It has its roots in the glorious medical tradition of the Pavia University, which includes the Nobel Prize for Medicine Camillo Golgi. San Matteo stands out nationally and internationally for a marked integration between the qualified assistance activities and the commitment in the field of scientific research, aimed at understanding the molecular mechanisms of the diseases, the development of new diagnostic technologies and treatments with a high level of innovation.

The mission of the Institute is carried out in the care and research in the field of transplantation, regenerative medicine and high complexity diseases.

With over 3,600 employees and an operating budget of just over 400 million, every year there are about 37,000 hospitalizations (15% of which are patients outside the region); 100,000 accesses in the emergency room, with over 500,000 services provided; 2,60 0,000 outpatient services.

Its scientific production is rich and the Policlinico is responsible for a significant contribution to the development of medical and health knowledge in Italy, so much that it is among the first three Italian IRCCS. There are amost 200 active current research projects ongoing (half of which related to transplantation) and about 700 publications per year.

The Policlinico San Matteo has always been attested on the frontier of technological innovation, with the development of minimally invasive and robotic surgical techniques and with the acquisition of state-of-the-art sanitary technology.

In the field of neuroscience, since the early 1970s a department of neurosurgery is dedicated to the treatment of both cerebral and spinal oncological diseases, malformations and cerebrovascular diseases. It is also equipped with a second level emergency department and a second level Stroke Unit, thus ensuring the complete management of all the traumatic and cerebrovascular urgencies, guaranteeing 24/7 assistance through a dedicated neurosurgical/neuroradiological team.
