The I.R.C.C.S. “Neuromed” – Mediterranean Neurological Institute, is a center of high specialization in the field of Neuroscience. At the heart of its mission is the complete integration between care, research and teaching.
Following a strong translational vocation, basic science and clinical research work in close collaboration for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological, neurosurgical, oncological, degenerative and chronic diseases, as well as rare diseases of the nervous system.
The “Gianpaolo Cantore” Department of Neurosurgery performs more than 1,500 surgeries yearly for brain and spinal diseases. In the field of oncology, in particular, Neuromed has one of the highest surgical volume in Italy for complete excision of spinal and cerebral tumors in critical areas. Particular attention is also devoted to the surgical treatment of diseases of the nervous system, such as Parkinson’s disease and drug-resistant epilepsy.
The Neurology Unit is involved in the diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system through highly specialized centers characterized by a multidisciplinary approach for specific diseases: Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, headaches, pain, sleep disorders, rare diseases of the nervous system and sensory organs.
Cardiovascular pathologies related to nervous system diseases are addressed by the Stroke Unit and by the Angio-Cardio-Neurology Division, while a Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Unit is devoted to the treatment of both central and peripheral vascular diseases. Finally, in the field of ophthalmology, high standards have been reached in the treatment of retinal macular degeneration and keratoconus.
The commitment to innovative technologies and procedures is also maintained in the fields of neurorehabilitation and radiodiagnostics.
From the research point of view, Neuromed Institute is strongly involved in neurological pathologies such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, spinocerebellar ataxia, fragile X syndrome, brain tumors, cerebral ischemia. Working in close collaboration with the clinic, researchers follow multiple approaches:
• Molecular basis of nervous system diseases
• Epidemiology
• Evaluation of genetic and environmental risk factors for chronic and degenerative diseases
• Evaluation of new neurosurgical techniques
• Innovation in neurorehabilitation through the study of biological and physiological mechanisms of brain damage recovery
• Genetic factors of stroke
• Determinants of arterial hypertension
• Advancements in neuroimaging technologies
• National and international Phase I, II, III and IV clinical trials
Recently established, the Neurobiotech Research Center, in the town of Caserta, aims at developing new concepts and approaches in personalized medicine. The convergence of big data analysis, epigenetics, advanced imaging diagnostics and neurocibernetics, including the innovative Cyber brain project, makes this center a landmark for a new vision of chronic and degenerative diseases prevention and therapy.
Finally, Neuromed has an active role in teaching and training. In collaboration with other academic and scientific institutions, such as the “Sapienza” and “Tor Vergata” universities of Rome, the Institute offers degree courses in health professions. At the same time, Continuing Medical Education programs for doctors, nurses, technicians and managers are regularly carried out.
